Oris Launch New Divers Sixty-Five ‘Glow’

Oris Divers Sixty-Five Glow

Lume is having its day in the sun (ironically) at the moment, being the focal point of several notable watches recently. The Bell & Ross Full Lum, Tag Heuer Night Diver and Christopher Ward C1 Moonglow all put the glowing stuff front and centre. And now Oris are getting in on the low-light action with the Divers Sixty-Five Glow.

The Sixty-Five is Oris’ retro diver, inspired by an original piece from the heyday of iconic dive watch design in 1965. Which means it has a classic stainless steel case that measures 40mm diameter, making it smaller than many current diving watches but still modern. The case is paired with a thick, black bezel that has unidirectional rotation. All of which are staples of the collection, albeit in various metals and colours.

What makes the Glow special is its dial. Where the Cotton Candies brought us fun pastels, this one is more sombre with the primary colour being grey, graduated from light in the centre to dark on the periphery. It matches the steel and black colouration of the case and steel bracelet or black leather strap. However, while it’s ‘more sombre’ it doesn’t exactly lack fun as the large circle and rectangle hour markers are coated in bright turquoise Super-LumiNova.

The high contrast between the green and grey is designed to give the impression that the lume is glowing even in broad daylight for that super legibility. And then in low-light conditions such as under water that legibility is preserved by the actual glow, which is also green. So, it’s as bright on the beach as it is 100m down, which is its water resistance limit.

Powering it is a collection staple, the Oris calibre 733 automatic movement. It has a 38-hour power reserve, which is a little lacking compared with other calibres that Oris use but for the most part it’s fine. With innovations like the Calibre 400 emerging, hopefully the Divers Sixty-Five will get its own update in the future, because it definitely deserves it.

The Divers Sixty-Five Glow is priced at £1,600 on bracelet and £1,400 on strap, so they’re not only highly legible but also highly accessible. I still prefer the Cotton Candy versions but I understand that bronze isn’t for everyone and this is a worthy alternative, not to mention a shade cheaper.
