Introducing: Oris Divers Sixty-Five ‘Cotton Candy’

Oris Divers Sixty-Five ‘Cotton Candy’ collection

Horology is all too often a very serious business concerned with the technical performance of miniscule engineering, fuelled by brands’ competitive streaks and desire to show off their latest innovations, as we’ve seen again and again at Watches & Wonders. Oris has decided to change the pace with a new timepiece that has a focus on being fun and putting a smile on your face, which we call all do with after the past year. As sweet as sugar, this is the Divers Sixty-Five ‘Cotton Candy’.

The basis of this watch can be found in last year’s Hölstein Edition 2020 that introduced the all-bronze case, bezel, crown and bracelet design to the Divers Sixty-Five. It’s a very charming combination especially at the new size of 38mm, which is perfect for its unisex appeal. That versatility is also shown in its modest 100m depth resistance and self-winding Oris Calibre 733 with 38-hour reserve that keeps it in an accessible price bracket.

However, where the new piece really begins to shine is with its three dial options: lipstick pink, wild green and sky blue – the perfect trio of pretty pastels. Protected by the domed sapphire crystal, each colour offers a refreshing shade that is very pleasing on the eye. The hands and indices are also filled with bright lume, meaning it’s as cheerful in the dark as it in the light.

The colours remind me of days spent at beaches and amusement parks and the copious amounts of candy floss I would devour (candy floss being the proper name for cotton candy, fight me), the blue and pink are particularly reminiscent of the titular confectionary. It’s a similar theme to Richard Mille’s 2019 Bonbon Collection but executed far more subtly than the limited editions that bore realistic depictions of marshmallows and liquorice.

And then there’s the wild green dial that has very little to do with having a sweet tooth… well, this wouldn’t be Watches & Wonders 2021 without a green option, plus the pastel shade is a nice twist on the forest of emerald and olive that we’ve seen so far.

As promised, this is not a complicated release. Three new dial colours that take an existing design and turn it into something new, bubbly and fun. It’s a little tricky to imagine who would actually wear one but if you’re confident enough to pull them off, then there are few timepieces on the market that fill the same niche for CHF 2,500. There is also a leather strap option for CHF 2,200.
