Designo Manufaktur & Exclusive Edition

Since the Maybach take on the iconic Mercedes G-Class made a splash in the admittedly niche luxury SUV market, it was obvious its progenitor was due for a bit of an update. Yet before the G-Class finally retires into the annals of automotive design history it’s going out with one last hurrah – the Designo Manufaktur and Exclusive Edition.

The first of the pair of customised editions G-Class owners may well have heard of before. Since 2015, the Designo Manufaktur collection has been a range of custom options available for the G 350 and G 500.

Rather than picking and choosing the extras you want however, the Designo Manufaktur edition showers them onto the car, taking in the entire collection. That includes the three colours unique to it, namely magma red, mystic white and obsidian black.

AMG 5-spoke alloy wheels, obsidian black inserts and an interior replete with red-stitched black Nappa leather – the Designo Manufaktur overhauls every aesthetic aspect of the cars in luxurious style. It turns what was a comfortable if practical cabin into something approaching Maybach standards.

The second of the two overhauls, the Exclusive Edition, takes the same approach but is only available on the already-impressive G63 and G65 AMG models. That pair come with a fair few extras as standard, especially when it comes to performance and the Exclusive Edition pretty much finishes off the look.

The extras on the G63 and G65 are more model specific, a necessity for their more performance-oriented construction. They include a stainless steel underguard, 21-inch wheels and AMG sports strips among a host of little nuanced aesthetic alterations. Inside you get two-tone upholstery of your choice plus contrasting trim, a final touch to the pinnacle of the G-Class range.

It might not be long before the G-Class trundles off to the great muddy field in the sky, but for the last few months it’s around it’s going out with a last hurrah – and if you’re waiting to see what the future holds for the car, these editions make investing here and now all the more tempting.
