Death from Overwork. It’s an appealing name right? Who wouldn’t want a slice of that particularly poisoned pie? Yet it’s a fitting one for a watchmaker like Karoshi, the Japanese name for the concept. With their debut timepiece, Karoshi hasn’t been content to produce ‘just’ a tourbillon, but a beautifully skeletonised, insanely-large tour de force.

‘Large’ doesn’t really do the 50mm case justice. The sapphire alone is 5mm high. But if you’re expecting a workout while wearing, its diameter is matched by its featherlight weight of 50g. A lot of that is achieved by using titanium, but more is because the case doubles as the baseplate of the movement before being sealed in sapphire crystal front and back.

For any watchmaker the Karoshi k-011/os-01 is an intense piece of horology. For a debut it’s the watchmaking equivalent of 36 Chambers.

Legend has it that Sam’s first word was ‘escapement’ and, while he might have started that legend himself, he’s been in the watch world long enough that it makes little difference. As the editor of Oracle Time, he’s our leading man for all things horological – even if he does love yellow dials to a worrying degree. Owns a Pogue; doesn’t own an Oyster Perpetual. Yet.
