Last week Patek Phillipe launched the Nautilus Ref. 5711, a Tiffany Blue version produced to celebrate Tiffany & Co.’s 170th anniversary. The watch is a limited edition of 10 pieces with the first selling at auction for a staggering $6.5 million. Well, one of those 10 (perhaps even the auctioned one) has already been spotted in the wild on the wrist of none other than the king of R&B and Hip Hop, Jay-Z.
On reflection, it really shouldn’t have been a surprise. Earlier this year Jay-Z and Beyoncé were both announced as ambassadors for Tiffany & Co. and the pair have already starred in the brand’s new TV commercial titled Date Night. Considering there is no status symbol as notable as a Nautilus, really Jay-Z wouldn’t be doing his job right if he didn’t show it off. It helps that it looks amazing on him.

However, there’s more than just Jay-Z’s status as an ambassador behind him touting the Tiffany Blue Nautilus. He’s a bonafide wristwatch enthusiast and collector. To list off just a couple of watches he owns: Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime Ref. 6300G, Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar, Richard Mille RM001, Rolex President Day-Date and a Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso Duoface. To be clear, that is a minuscule sample of his full collection.
Also, Jay-Z picking up the Tiffany Blue Nautilus isn’t his first major purchase of the year, far from it. Back in summer he bought the most expensive new car ever built, the Rolls Royce Boat Tail. When it was sold, all we knew was that a famous person in the music industry had picked it up, only for it to later be revealed that it was in fact Jay-Z. Again, we shouldn’t have been surprised, the car came with a custom Bovet 1822 watch engraved with a personalised star scape and was stocked with what is widely recognised as Jay-Z’s favourite wine.
