The Presage collection is held together by their combination of traditional Japanese designs with high-end timekeeping technology – more in the vein of traditional Swiss timepieces than something like the brand’s Prospex line. The latest addition to the collection is the Sharp Edged GMT Series.
The pattern on the dial is a classic Japanese hemp leaf design called Asanoh and it looks superb, although we are now becoming familiar with it as it was used on the first Presage Sharp Edged Series that was launched last year.
However, this time round we get a new set of colours to choose from, again based on traditional Japanese art and nature: Aitetsu – the blueish tone from indigo iron, Tokiwa – the green of evergreen trees, Sumi-iro – the black of traditional ink and Hihada-iro – the reddish-brown from Japanese cedar wood.
It’s hard to pick a favourite. Green is popular at the moment but that red-brown is cool too. If it were on rose gold maybe it would be the standout but alas all of them are presented on stainless steel with a hard-wearing coating.
The major innovation with this latest series is the addition of the GMT timer, making an already versatile watch even more so. The GMT hand follows the same sharp-angled design as the rest of the watch and has a different colour on each version to help it stand out.
Additionally, there is a date subdial at 6 o’clock and a power-reserve indicator at 9. The 45-hour power-reserve is provided by the GMT calibre 6R64. It rounds this series out as a very reliable and usable watch suited to the daily needs of a frequent traveller. It’s a fair size too at 42mm diameter and has a solid (for a non-diver) water resistance of 100m.
A welcome addition of some extra utility to the Presage collection and Seiko always wows with its rich colours. The new series will be available from May 2021 for £1,300 a piece.
