The Admiral has always been Corum’s sporty middle ground, nestled between the off-kilter, painfully-arty Bubble and the haute horological Golden Bridge. Its nautical influences have been turned to everything from blacked-out skeletons to wood-dialled numbers sprinkled with regatta flags. Now though, Corum is showing an uncharacteristic level of restraint with the impeccable Admiral 42 Bronze.
The name says it all really. The new watch is a 42mm version of the Admiral dressed in patina-gathering bronze. It’s a great new look for the signature dodecagonal bezel and faceted case of the watch and all those surfaces will, in time, show off the patina wonderfully.

Don’t worry about it looking patchy though – a risk for many a bronze timepiece. The entire case has been satin brushed to encourage a more even finish across the board. The end result is, thankfully, vintage rather than grubby.

Tying in to the nautical theme, the case is paired with either a dark blue or a green dial and matching strap, both of which are a classic fit with bronze. The Admiral’s trademark pennant-shaped indexes are also on the restrained side, using thin black lines rather than colour to show off the detail.

The end result is a watch that shows off what’s kept the Admiral around for 60-odd years, from its unique faceted shape to the idiosyncratic hour markers. It’s nothing ground-breaking, but it’s good to see that bronze hasn’t worn out its welcome yet, especially in a watch this handsome.
