Custom watches are everywhere, with cool, newlook Daytonas and black-clad classics coming from some serious specialists. But therein lie a couple of problems. First is the cost; most of these places add a good percentage on top of the original watch. Then there’s the fact that there needs to be an original watch in the first place. It’s the difference between giving your car a paint job and building it from scratch.
Established back in 2014, Undone aims to be the answer to both of those issues as the world’s first comprehensive watch customiser. It has certainly been sending waves in all directions, beginning with the Urban Customiser, the Kickstarter campaign that put Undone on the map. To say it was a success would be a bit of an understatement; it reached 1306 per cent of its original target.
The concept is pretty simple. You go online, pick a base watch and, component by component, colour by colour, build your perfect timepiece. From the style and colour of the dial to the case metal, right down to the type of hands, it’s enough to make the final decision a near-impossibility.
There are fewer options available than some of the other custom watch specialists out there we’ve discussed in the past, but then Undone watches start at around £220. When you can build your own watch and barely notice it leaving your account, you can’t really complain that they don’t have your particular shade of green available.
The custom watch catalogue is split into three distinct models. There’s that original Urban model, cool and contemporary with an impressive selection of dials and colours to its name. Then there’s the Aqua which, if it’s name wasn’t enough of a hint, is a chunky diving watch complete with 200m water resistance. Finally, there’s the Basecamp, a rugged tool watch meant to survive a rockfall or two.
Still, if that choice is simply too much for you to deal with – and we wouldn’t blame you, deciding what to have for lunch is hard enough – then Undone has some seriously cool, pre-made collaborative pieces available. Too many to go into, actually. Except, that is, for the latest, which deserves a little bit of attention.
The Snoopy Speedmaster is one of Omega’s most collectible pieces and it’s not often you see the Peanuts gang pop up anywhere else – until now. Undone’s Space Program Lunar Mission watch bears some striking resemblances to the Moonwatch of course, with its chronograph/ tachymeter combination, crowned with a spacesuited snoopy at three o’clock. Rather than having to get lucky at a vintage dealer though, you can order it yourself… and prices start at £360. Go figure.
Undone is proof that good, solid custom watches with automatic movements don’t need to break the bank and that cool collaborations needn’t carry a premium. In fact, everything at Undone seems too good to be true. All we can say is: order one and find out.
