Citizen Celebrate 100th Anniversary with The ‘Citizen’ Limited Edition Featuring Indigo Washi Paper Dial

Citizen The Citizen Limited Edition Indigo Washi Paper Dial

Japanese watchmaking giant Citizen is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the first Citizen-branded watch in 2024. Which, as you might expect, means they have released a commemorative limited edition. Specifically, it’s the new The ‘Citizen’ Limited Edition with Indigo Washi Dial.

This is not the first washi dial limited edition Citizen have released recently, as back in March they released an attractive pair with nature-inspired finishes and a white dialled version last year. The new edition is closest in style to that white dial version because it has exactly the same case, 38mm in diameter and made from Super Titanium, Citizen’s specific brand of titanium.

Obviously the highlight of the new watch is its dial, which is dark indigo in colour. It’s made from dyed washi paper, a traditional Japanese style of paper that is incredibly thin and difficult to make. The dye that is used is known as Japan Blue, perfect for a watch made to commemorate one of Japan’s most popular watch brands. I really like the subtle pattern and shifting colour produced by the dying process. It almost looks like a dark pool of water in a cave, mysterious and eerily inviting.

Beneath the indigo washi dial is housed one of Citizen’s eco-drive movements. These are cutting edge quartz movements with insane accuracies of +/- 5 seconds per year. Plus, thanks to their light-powered charging they are unlikely to run our of battery unless you keep them shut in a box for months on end.

The combination of the traditional Japanese crafts on display via the dyed indigo washi dial, the titanium case, eco-drive movement and the limited production of just 600 pieces means that this is one of the most expensive Citizen watches you’ll see. Specifically, it’s priced at £3,595, which is similar to the other washi dial watches I mentioned previously. Seems that Citizen is keen to move into a more luxury market as well as continuing to offer amazing value with collections like the Tsuyosa.
