Citizen Launch Iconic Nature Collection Washi Dial Limited Editions

Citizen Iconic Nature Collection limited editions

In what has to be one of the most confusing naming conventions in the entire watch industry, one of Citizen’s many collections is called the Citizen. Citizen’s Citizen is a versatile collection that runs across a wide range of styles from the fairly industrial, integrated bracelet Citizen Series 8 to more refined eco-drive watches like the Citizen Iconic Nature Collection limited editions with washi dials that are being launched today.

Jumping straight to the dials of the new limited editions, they are definitely the highlights of the pieces. There are two versions being produced and each has differences in colour and pattern, although they are both produced from the same material. And that material is washi paper, a traditional Japanese material typically used in paper screens that allow natural light to be diffused through a room.

This property of washi paper being partially translucent is very important here, to allow light to pass through the dial and power the solar eco-drive movement. They’ve used it on a handful of models now, including a previous limited edition.

Also being paper, the material has quite a fibrous texture which can be seen in delicate shifting of colours across the two gradient dials. Plus, the natural flexibility of the material means that it can be shaped into specific patterns. The first, ref. AQ4100-22W, has a teal dial which has been given a pattern of overlapping circles, creating a series of pointed oval shapes that are representative of the petals of summer flowers.

The second limited edition in the Citizen Iconic Nature Collection with washi dials is the ref. AQ4106-00W. This one has a brown dial with a striated pattern of lines radiating from the centre of the dial and that runs from the 7-minute marker clockwise to the 53-minute marker. That is such a specific area of the dial to be patterned that it has to be intentional and indeed it is, though it might not be immediately obvious what it’s supposed to be.

If you look at the eagle insignia at 6 o’clock, you’ll see that the patterned areas of the dial match the positions of the eagle’s wings on the logo, with each of the little lines in the washi paper representing the bird’s feathers.

Zooming out from the dials, both references have 38.3mm diameter cases made from Citizen’s Super Titanium, a particularly hard version of the lightweight metal. On top of that they both have Duratect coatings, one in platinum colour and the other in Sakura pink. The design of the case has a wide, smooth bezel and facetted lugs that lead into sustainably sourced crocodile leather straps.

Housed inside is the calibre A060 eco-drive movement, which is Citizen’s advanced solar powered quartz movement. It has incredible accuracy and essentially an infinite power reserve assuming you don’t keep it in a lightless environment for too long. Plus the date will automatically update to account for shorter months and even leap years, not requiring adjustment until the year 2100.

Citizen Iconic Nature Collection limited editions

Between the intricate washi paper dials, high tech super titanium and Duratect cases and cutting-edge eco-drive movement, the Citizen Iconic Nature Collection washi dial limited editions are not exactly accessible. The ref. AQ4100-22W is £2,795 and the ref. AQ4106-00W is £2,995 and both are limited to 300 pieces each. That makes them extremely exclusive, especially for a Citizen. Still, they provide yet more proof that when it comes to nature inspired dials, you can’t beat Japanese crafts.
