While Christopher Ward are one of the major proponents of accessible Swiss-made tool watches, in recent years they have been on a journey to explore more experimental designs with the launch of the Bel Canto and C12 Loco. Now they’ve teamed up with Worn & Wound to create a collaborative edition of the C12 Loco inspired by 1920s American Art Deco design, unveiled as part of the Windup Watch Fair NYC. The new edition is called the Christopher Ward x Worn & Wound C12 Brooklynite.

Jumping straight to the dial, it’s a pale champagne colour with vertical markings in relief with a grainy finish. It makes for an interesting alternative to the sunray brushed finishing of the original Loco collection. The geometric nature of it is inspired by the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower, built in 1929 and the tallest building in Brooklyn for 80 years, famed for its limestone façade and impressive clock.

That clock is referenced specifically in the updated design of the time display of the watch on the subdial at 12 o’clock. The large bar indexes interspersed with diamond-shaped decorations is lifted almost directly from the design of the famous clock. It gives the Christopher Ward x Worn & Wound C12 Brooklynite a strikingly different appearance to the hyper modern, partially skeletonised look of the original. I also like the way that its more traditional appearance juxtaposes with the open balance at 6 o’clock, making the centrepiece of the design stand out all the more.

Beyond the updated display, this is the C12 Loco as we already know it. 41mm steel case with integrated bracelet and highly faceted design with 12-sided bezel. Inside is the Christopher Ward calibre CW-003 manual winding with 144-hour power reserve. It of course stands out for having a flying balance on the dial side of the watch, allowing you to admire it in motion without flipping it over to view the exhibition caseback.
The Christopher Ward x Worn & Wound C12 Brooklynite is limited to 100 pieces with 30 being exclusive to the Windup Watch Fair NYC and the remaining 70 available from Christopher Ward’s online boutique. It’s priced at £3,995, the same price as the standard C12 Loco on steel bracelet.
