As we gear up for the explosion of releases due at SIHH ’19, there are plenty of watchmakers showing their hand well in advance of January. Jaeger-LeCoultre however seem to be employing a good deal of showmanship with the reveal of their first piece leading up to the big day, the Master Ultra-Thin Moon Enamel.
Jaeger-LeCoultre’s whole ‘Art of Precision’ ethos goes well beyond just the usual drive for accuracy that most watchmakers strive for. It encompasses that of course, but it also includes the attention to detail and level of finishing any maison would be proud of. No matter how they coin their definition of precision, the new Master Ultra-Thin Moon Enamel is it.
The 100-piece limited edition is beautiful. Set in an elegant, 39mm white gold case, the Master is pure classicism with a simple, sophisticated design. The highlight however is the dial. It’s created in two stages: first, the metal is engraved with stunning guilloche sunray emanating from the dial; the engraving is then overlaid with semi-transparent blue enamel for a deep, lustrous finish.
That level of attention to detail carries through to the multi-layered moon phase indicator, with each element decorated separately before being assembled. It’s subtle but puts the Master a good step above most watches.
The Jaeger-LeCoultre calibre 925/2 calibre is just as elegant as the watch at large, measuring in at a slim 10.04mm. It improves on the previous models’ power reserve, upping 43 hours to a decent 72. Mechanically it’s not the most extreme movement, but it has been decorated exceptionally, with Geneva stripes, Perlage and blue screws – the whole hate horological gamut.
Set on a traditional black alligator strap – we’d like to see it on dark blue but never mind – the Master Ultra-Thin Moon Enamel epitomises Jaeger-LeCoultre’s own approach to precision. Granted we’re looking forward to some serious watchmaking come January, but as a taster this more than whets our appetite.
