Back in the summer of last year Norfolk-based watchmaker Garrick announced the launch of their latest collection, the Garrick S5. It was a smaller piece at a size of 39mm with a focus on refined beauty. Now, Garrick have launched the newest version of the S5 that introduces a moonphase complication to the collection, the watch fittingly called the Garrick S5 Moon Phase.
In terms of the case design, it features a 39mm diameter in a round shape and despite being a dress watch it’s pretty robust. It’s made from stainless steel and has 100m water resistance, giving it a surprising amount of durability considering that many dress watches settle for 50m water resistance or less. It is worth noting that the case is also available in gold if you want a more classical style.

As for the dial, that’s where the S5 Moon Phase comes into its own as it features a hand-engraved guilloché pattern in the centre and around the periphery. The Roman numerals on the brushed hour ring are laser engrave and inked by hand. At 6 o’clock you’ll find the titular moonphase, which shows the current position of the moon its cycle, decorated with a field of stars.
Garrick create their watches on a made-to-order basis and as such they’re almost entirely customisable. The colour, pattern, moonphase style, hands and more can all be chosen from a range of options. The examples shown here feature salmon or blue dials with engine turned guilloché and lancine hands. Other options include the characteristic Garrick anchor hands and a range of finishes such as blued steel and polishing.

Powering the piece is the Garrick UT-G05 manual movement with 60-hour power reserve. It’s the same movement as the standard S5 although obviously it’s been updated with the moonphase indicator. What makes the UT-G05 different to a lot of Garrick’s movements is that the balance wheel is located on the back of the watch rather than on the dial side, such as with the recent MK2, which makes sense here because the dial space is needed for the additional complication.

The S5 Moon Phase isn’t technically a limited edition but like all Garrick watches there is limited production due to the hand-made, in-house and bespoke elements. To put that in numbers, only 10 will be produced in 2024. Pricewise it’s £24,000, which on paper is a lot of money but it never stops Garrick’s waiting list from getting longer and longer. A svelte 39mm moonphase is sure to be an absolute hit.
