Wolkov Launch Their Second Collection, the W22 Wristwatch

Wolkov W22

To really make a name for yourself in the watchmaking business you have to have ambition. Especially as a small brand. Many mid-tier watchmakers lack the drive to push the boat out, falling back on old faithfuls like retro divers. You can certainly be a good watchmaker doing that but you’ll never be iconic. One brand who could never be accused of being lazy with their designs is Wolkov. An up and coming brand whose second collection, called W22, is available on Kickstarter.

At the core of W22 is its unique case shape. An oval with flattened out sides akin to a Nascar track. It’s immediately eye-catching and as bold as they come, a conversation starter for sure. It sits prominently on the wrist with a length of 47mm, which is very large. Although, the silhouette isn’t as massive as that would imply as the width is only 37mm.

However, what makes the W22 different from any other oval watch are snapping lugs, which were developed specially by Wolkov. The snapping lug system operates by having lugs that aren’t affixed directly to the watch, but are instead attached to the interchangeable straps. It makes it easier than ever to swap the straps at a moment’s notice. The lugs are fairly chunky, which may not be to all tastes, but they have a tactile heft.

The Wolkov W22’s display is also distinctive. There’s a peripheral minute track with exaggerated five minute markers and a central hour scale around the hand stack. Speaking of the hands, they’re also highly stylised. The hour hand is a thick, white arrow, the minute hand is black with a medium sized triangle base blending into a traditional hand and the seconds hand is bright red with a small triangle base and is the longest of the three. The two primary colourways available are Neige (white) and Bleu Fumé (gradient blue). The Neige version is my personal favourite.

Inside is a classic movement, the Sellita SW200. It’s an automatic calibre with a 38-hour power reserve and excellent longevity because of its ease to repair should anything go wrong. It provides a stable base from which Wolkov have been able to build their less conventional design.

Wolkov W22 is available to order through Kickstarter from June 13, where its VIP Special price is just $399 (approx. £315) for a limited time. Following that its regular price is $999 (approx. £790) so whether you swoop in early or take some time it’s still incredibly accessible. A great piece to add to your collection to add some quirky energy.
