Ulysse Nardin Blast into Space with The Sci-Fi Inspired Freak S

Ulysse Nardin Freak S

The Ulysse Nardin Freak occupies a unique position in watchmaking. It’s the kind of watch most of us can admire from a distance without the urge to get it on our wrists. The new Freak S however is a version of the carousel-based complication I’d be more than happy to take for a spin; it’s the most fun version yet.

That fun comes from the fact the carousel movement (where the whole module rotates instead of individual hands) has been designed to look like a spaceship. It has a brand new double oscillator with differential system that’s been made to look like high-tech turbine thrusters. Drawing on my sci-fi knowledge, it’s as if the aircraft from James Cameron’s Avatar have been fused with the profile of an X-Wing from Star Wars. To drive the impression home, the base plate has been made from black aventurine glass, creating a field of stars. MB&F had better up their game.

Considering that I’ve already mentioned the new double oscillators, it’s perhaps unsurprising that the entire calibre is new. It’s called the UN-251, an automatic movement with a 72-hour power reserve. In addition to the new oscillators, it showcases several technologies Ulysse Nardin have been perfecting over the years. The winding system is now twice as effective as traditional automatic watches, meaning the power reserve is easy to keep topped up. Additionally, several components are coating in DiamonSIL, a coating that protects them from abrasion.

Housing the interstellar calibre of the Ulysse Nardin Freak S is a 45mm diameter case made from a combination of materials. The body of the case consists of black ceramic, DLC coated titanium and rose gold for a mixture of extreme scratch resistance, light weight durability and sci-fi beauty. The bezel on the other hand is solid rose gold to match the bridges and structural elements of the spaceship and the circumferential indexes.

The Freak S is limited to just 75 pieces, only 40 of which will be produced in 2022. A trip on this spaceship will cost CHF 130,000 (approx. £105,265) a bargain compared to the going rate for a seat on a Space X flight or Virgin Galactic.
