The Indy 500 is set to take place at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on the 24th May, celebrating the 110th anniversary of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing”. The race sees 33 cars take on the challenge of the 500-mile course. In honour of the milestone anniversary, Tag Heuer have launched a special edition watch to commemorate the race: the Tag Heuer Formula 1 Solargraph x Indy 500. The second Solargraph launch of the spring after last month’s pastel offering.

Structurally, the new watch has the same overall design as the previous pastel editions. That means a 38mm sandblasted stainless steel case with matching 3-link bracelet and a TH-polylight rotating bezel. The bezel itself is black with a brown 60-minute scale that matches the Indianapolis Motor Speedway logo of a flying wheel. That same logo is found on the dial at 6 o’clock.

The dial itself continues with the same colour scheme: the centre of the display is black with a brown minute track around the outside of the applied hour markers. It has the characteristic Tag Heuer logo shaped indices at 12, 6 and 9, balanced at 3 o’clock by the date window. In the very middle of the display are the Mercedes style hands and bright red seconds hand, adding a race-ready pop of brightness to the piece.

Housed inside the Formula 1 Solargraph x Indy 500 Limited Edition is the calibre TH50-00. Solargraph means that it uses a quartz oscillator with a battery that is charged by the light – one minute of direct sunlight will power the watch for 24-hours and after a full charge, the watch will remain autonomous for 10 months. Plus, the watch can be powered by both natural and artificial light, meaning unless you keep it in a drawer for months on end, it will essentially never run out of power.

If you’re attending the race, or plan to watch from home, it’s a fun memento of the occasion. Plus, it’s fun to see the Formula 1 branch out into other areas of motorsport. The Formula 1 Solargraph x Indy 500 is limited to 1,110 pieces in honour of the 110th anniversary of the race and is priced at £1,900 – or for those in Indianapolis, $2,250.
