Wimbledon may have ended weeks ago but the British summertime is still in full swing – in fact it’s swinging a lot harder than many expected. Embracing the heat, British watchmaker Studio Underd0g has launched a new watch inspired by the greatest culinary delight of the season: Strawberries & Cream. Alongside the Watermel0n and Mint Ch0c Chip, the Strawberries & Cream means Studio Underd0g’s collection is delightfully refreshing.
Something that British watchmakers are famous for is their willingness to use bright, bold colours – just look at the recent Christopher Ward C63 Sealanders – and colour is at the heart of what Studio Underd0g do. The dial of the Strawberries & Cream is, perhaps unsurprisingly, strawberry red with a slight gradient from light to dark towards the periphery. It also has a slightly granular texture like the outside of the titular fruit. What really sells the illusion though is that the hour markers are shaped like seeds.
However, you can’t have Strawberries & Cream without the cream, which is represented by the big eye 30-minute timer and peripheral tachymeter. That links nicely to the fact that like its predecessors, this watch is a chronograph. It has central hours, minutes and chronograph seconds with two subdials in a bicompax layout for running seconds and the aforementioned big eye 30-minute counter. ‘Big eye’ is a term used when a particular subdial has a wider diameter than the others on the dial.
In terms of structure and performance, the new watch is identical to its mint, melon and aubergine brethren. Meaning it has a 38.5mm diameter stainless steel case housing the Seagull ST-1901 manual movement with swan neck regulator, which has a 45-hour power reserve. While it would be nice to see some innovation in Studio Underd0g’s cases and movement choice, it’s very much a situation where if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
Plus, there has been a slight change to how the watch feels on the wrist because it comes with two new straps. The first is an Epsom calfskin leather strap in a light beige to match the cream and the second is a Milanese mesh bracelet. The leather option comes from The Strap Tailor, a fellow British artisan.
Everything about this watch is fun, including its inception and origin. Watch and tennis journalist Miguel Seabra is a close friend of the brand and made a joke on their Instagram page about a colourway that meshed his two passions. Jumping on the idea, Studio Underd0g worked with Seabra to bring about the Strawberries & Cream as presented.
What’s important to note is that with this new release Studio Underd0g is trialling a new method of launch. Previously their watches have been limited production drops that sell out instantly, leading to many people missing out and grey market prices rocketing above the accessible RRP.
However, the Strawberries & Cream Chronograph will be available for an order period of seven days from August 9 – August 16 and everyone who purchases the watch in that time will be guaranteed a watch.
The Strawberries & Cream is priced at £575, which is the highest to date but is also totally reasonable considering it comes with multiple strap options and there’s no production limit meaning costs could be higher.
