Seiko Introduce Prospex 1968 Heritage Diver’s GMT ‘Seashadow’ Black Boutique Edition

Seiko have been celebrating the 60^th anniversary of their dive watch collections this year so we’ve seen a couple of interpretations of the Prospex 1968 Heritage Diver’s GMT already. There was the official anniversary limited edition followed by the non-limited version and now to complete the triumvirate, they’re releasing a boutique special edition. It’s the Prospex 1968 Heritage Diver’s GMT ‘Seashadow’ Black Boutique Edition.

Unsurprisingly, its specifications are the same as those previous versions, meaning it measures a broad 42mm x 13.3mm in steel with 300m water resistance. It’s also fitted with a ceramic insert dive timer bezel, providing extra scratch resistance and colour protection to one of the most important features of a dive watch. A unidirectional bezel with elapsed time scale lets you keep track of how long you’ve been underwater, which is vital for calculating how much air you have left in the scuba tank – the unidirectional rotation means that even if you nudge it out of place, it can only ever over-estimate how long you’ve been underwater, making you return to the surface sooner and safely.

What makes the ‘Seashadow’ Black Boutique Edition special is the bi-colour plating on the grip of the bezel, giving it a slightly more luxury aesthetic. The name Seashadow refers to the illusion of objects and creatures looking completely black in the dim realms of the underwater world, which brings us to the dial. It’s a glossy black dial with golden coloured accents to emphasise the luxe vibe even further, making the watch more of a desk diver in comparison to the previous versions. There are also the extra 24-hour scale and matching hand to make this a GMT model.

Inside, it houses the 6R54 automatic with 72-hour power reserve and -15/+25 seconds per day accuracy. It’s essentially the GMT version of the 6R55 that now features in the revamped Alpinist collection also launching today. As a boutique exclusive it’s the most limited model out of the triplets, with only 500 pieces available worldwide and of that a select few exclusively from the London Bond Street Boutique.
