Ressence Introduce Type 1 DX2 Limited Edition in Collaboration with Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons

Ressence Type 1 DX2

Ressence have low-key been one of the most exciting and interesting watchmakers for a while now. Their innovative Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS) puts them right at the forefront of the technical game and with this latest release they have further proven themselves adept at artistry as well. The new Type 1 DX2 has been created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the United Arab Emirates.

On a mechanics front, this is simply a reskinned Type 1 Slim, which we’ve looked at before. It has the same hours, minutes, seconds and weekday functions on its rotating dial, thanks to the ROCS module. In traditional watchmaking terminology, think of a modern take on a carrousel movement.

Ressence Type 1 DX2

However, where the Type 1 DX2 excels beyond its Type 1 Slim brethren is the pattern and colour of its dial. Ressence’s core, non-limited collections tend to have a fairly limited colour palette of blue, black and white and it’s really only in special editions that they explore more Avant Garde options (like the red version we provided a link to in the previous paragraph), of which this is arguably the most extreme. It also happens to be the hands down prettiest.

Ressence Type 1 DX2

It’s an engraved Arabic geometric pattern in various shades of sand coloured PVD. It evokes incredibly strong images of the landscape in the UAE and is absolutely stunning. A similar sandy theme can be found on Ressence’s limited edition Type 1 Squared DXB, but this one executes on it differently. I love the lack of uniformity in the shapes – symmetry and regular patterns being a western ideal – which makes it feel authentically Arabian.

Ressence Type 1 DX2

A large part of that authenticity comes from the input of Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons, one of the foremost luxury watch and jewellery retailers in the UAE. This is their second collaboration with Ressence and is in celebrate the UAE’s 50th anniversary. It’s crazy to think that many of the oldest watchmaking ateliers have been around longer than the country where they sell many of their most expensive timepieces.

Its polished titanium case has had a slight change in that it now has a 41mm diameter, as opposed to 42mm. The major thing though is that the new patterned dial does mean the price has gone up by a noticeable chunk.

Ressence Type 1 DX2

The Type 1 DX2 is limited to just 25 pieces at CHF 22,500 excluding taxes (approx. £18,000). That’s an increase of over £4000 from the base model, but overall, it seems justified. This is a highly exclusive watch and the best looking Type 1 Slim from an exciting watchmaker. Looking forward to seeing what’s next from them.
