Patek Philippe’s Second Most Complicated Watch The Sky Moon Tourbillon Gets a New Look

Patek Philippe Sky Moon Tourbillon Haut Artisanat

Patek Philippe really don’t do things in half measures. Rather than drip-feeding a few exceptional creations, they’ve gone and dropped a whole host of them at once, ranging from a blinged-out women’s Nautilus (amongst other Metiers d’Art pieces as part of Patek Philippe’s Rare Handcrafts showcase 2020-2021) to a new set of minute repeaters. What we have here though is the most exceptional of the lot: the Sky Moon Tourbillon Haut Artisanat Ref. 6002R-001.

Originally introduced in 2001 as Patek’s most complicated watch, the Sky Moon Tourbillon has since been usurped by the Grandmaster Chime. It’s still a show-stopper though and for the first time here one rendered in rose gold. Technically, this is part of Pateks new drop of minute repeaters, but it’s exceptional enough that we’ve given it its own solo showcase. Can you blame us?

Like the editions before it, the new version sports 12 complications across two dials. Ready? They are: hours, minutes, day, date, perpetual calendar function, leap year indicator, moon position, moon phase indicator, moon rising time, sidereal time, sky chart, minute repeater and, of course, a tourbillon. Yikes.

The actual calibre number is the Calibre R TO 27 QR SID LU CL, with the letters denoting the various complications, but all that remains to be said is that it’s a masterpiece. And that is has a 38-hour power reserve which given the sheer number of functions, is understandable.

Yet what sets this new iteration apart is more than the rose gold but the exceptional finishing of said gold. The entire case has been engraved with ornate scrollwork, while the dial has been given a champlevé and cloisonné enamel overhaul in a complimentarily classical motif in a dark, vintage brown. It’s stunning.

Finished with a chocolate brown alligator strap with some lighter brown stitching – nothing too avant garde here – Patek Philippe are once again illustrating just why they’re the most prestigious watchmaker in the world.
