Panerai have launched a special edition Luminor Luna Rossa Carbotech available to order exclusively today (November 30th, 2023). It’s available strictly for 24-hours via the Panerai e-commerce website. The watch itself is a celebration of Panerai’s ongoing partnership with the Luna Rossa sailing team and is a capstone to the Luna Rossa collection that was launched earlier this year. In homage to the 37th edition of the prestigious America Cup, the Luminor Luna Rossa Carbotech is a limited edition of 37 pieces.
In terms of style, the new watch, Ref. PAM01529, bears a lot of resemblance to the PAM01408 from the Luna Rossa collection, with a few key distinctions. While the colourway is the same, a combination of dark blue, red and black, the materials and size are completely different. As the name suggests, the Luminor Luna Rossa Carbotech is made from Panerai’s proprietary carbon composite material. It’s a lot tougher and lighter than the steel DLC of the standard collection model making far more of a high-performance case.
As for the size, the special edition is 44mm in diameter, which is certainly large but not unexpected from Panerai. It’s perhaps exacerbated by the fact that the majority of the watch industry is favouring smaller, sub-40mm watch designs at the moment, which makes the Luminor feel even bigger. However, by maintaining their larger sizes Panerai have also maintained the rugged, masculine aesthetic of their watches, which is a key aspect to their popularity (Sly Stallone himself is famously a fan).
Looking at the dial in more detail, it follows a sandwich style design which means there are two layers on top of each other with a layer of lume between them that shines up through the cut-out designs in the top layer. That’s how they create the recessed appearance of the hour markers and 12/6 Arabic numerals set into the blue sunray brushed upper dial, it also helps them to shine brighter with their lume. There’s then a date window at 3 o’clock and snailed small seconds subdial in black at 9 o’clock with a red hand. The central hour and minute hands are black with strips of lume down the centre.
Powering the Luminor Luna Rossa Carbotech PAM01529 is the P.9010 calibre with 3-day power reserve and automatic winding, a staple calibre in the Panerai line up. And that’s really the main story here, everything is classic Panerai. The materials, the colours, the Luna Rossa partnership, the shapes, it’s all things we’ve seen before but executed with great style and it all adds up to create a watch that’s quintessentially Panerai. It’s limited to 37 pieces at a price of £14,000 and as mentioned is exclusively available for 24-hours.
