The Nomos Glashütte Autobahn is one of the German watchmaker’s standout watches and for good reason. It combines their traditional efficiency and minimalist design with a characterful speedometer aesthetic. A new trio of limited edition colourways, called the Nomos Glashütte Autobahn Director’s Cut, take that motoring theme even further.
First, let’s talk about that name Director’s Cut. It seems like a title that would be more appropriate for a cinematically themed watch, not a motoring one. However, what it is referring to is the fact that Werner Aisslinger designed the trio of colourways, the mind behind the original Autobahn model. They allow him to add design details in the same way a director’s cut adds scenes to a film.
Each watch within the collection also has an individual designation: A3, A7 and A9, which are references to specific motorways in German. Apt for a watch named Autobahn Director’s Cut. A3 has a white dial with blue accents and an orange speedometer arch. Then, A7 has a blue-yellow combination with A9 being grey-black.
These colourways add a lively flavour to the range, each with a distinctive retro flair inspired by the bold colours of the 60s-70s, especially in the automotive industry. Additionally, they don’t compromise on any of the signature elements of the watch such as the large multi-date aperture at 6 and that lume filled arch from 8 to 4.
In every way, they are as stylish as we expect from Nomos. Even the bracelet, which is exclusive to the limited editions, is exceptional in its minimalism. A fine-link steel number with a fixed clasp and four circular cut-outs.
The movement, on the other hand, is a staple of the collection. The DUW6101 helped establish Nomos Glashütte as a manufacture to take seriously, because it was the first one to introduce a date function. Since then they’ve gone on to create the 41 Update, an altogether more elaborate date function and one of the most unique to be found.
The three Autobahn Director’s Cuts are limited to 175 pieces at a price of £3,800. Which is the same price as the non-limited versions. Are they a necessary update to the collection? Not really. But that’s the joy of director’s cuts.
