The digital art train is going great guns and you can jump aboard with ARX, who are auctioning a Rolex inspired NFT (non-fungible token) by MRE today, entitled ‘Race Against Time’. At the top end NFTs are selling for values equivalent to millions of pounds, with Beeple setting the benchmark at $69 million. So, let’s jump into MRE’s latest piece to hit the market.
‘Race Against Time’ is a 1-of-1 video art piece created by MRE, a leading creator within the space. It depicts a group of identical humanoid figures attempting to cross the dial of the iconic Rolex ‘Hulk’ Submariner – until they are brutally prevented by the ruthless progress of the watch’s hour, minute and second hands.
It’s a commentary on humanity’s tendency to become obsessed with the past and the future to the detriment of the present. We come from a place of safety at the dial’s edge (the past) and in trying to reach the centre (the future) we allow ourselves to be put at risk in the present. By taking our time to appreciate the present we can avoid danger, after all what’s the rush anyway?

The choice of watch isn’t just coincidence either. The Hulk with its green dial and matching diving bezel is one of the most sought-after Submariners – and modern Rolex watches – out there. Which makes the mad rush to the middle somewhat relatable, it’s us every time one pops up for sale.
If you’re interested in procuring ‘Race Against Time’ or just checking it out in more detail, the ARX auction is due to finish at 21:00 today (May 26, 2021) at which point the limited edition digital artwork will be transferred to the new owner’s digital wallet. So ironically, if you want in, you’re in a race against time. At the time of writing, the leading bid stands at $45,676.80 (approx. £32,250).
