Suntory’s new 2021 Blossom Harmony whisky is their first ever to be aged in sakura wood barrels, giving the beverage a unique cherry blossom aroma. While we’re all stuck at home, just one smell is enough to transport you across the globe.
Just picture yourself strolling through a park in Japan in late March or early May. The sakura trees are in full bloom, hung with colourful paper lanterns that light up the delicate pink flowers. The people around you eat and drink in celebration, enjoying the vitality of the flowering trees, it’s a party, a festival in honour of the coming planting season and the following harvest. An appreciation for the fragility of life.
Could there be anything more serene?
Unfortunately, because of the pandemic, this year’s Cherry Blossom Festival, or Hanabi, is likely to face cancellation or at best a dramatic reduction in tourism to the traditional parks. However, the limited edition Hibiki whisky, with its metallic red floral pattern branding on the box and label, really brings a sense of Japanese culture.
Suntory has yet to announce a price, but it is expected to be ready by May 25. A fitting date for release at the end of the blossom season.
