Maurice Lacroix PONTOS S Chronograph Bridges the Gap Between Sporty and Elegant

Maurice Lacroix are typically known for making popular sports watches with bold designs like the Aikon. However, they also produce the PONTOS, a more classical and refined collection that was revamped in 2020. Now, a new model is joining the PONTOS line up that bridges the gap between Maurice Lacroix’s sporty and elegant designs, the PONTOS S Chronograph.

The diameter of the PONTOS S Chronograph’s case is 43mm, which is typically large for a steel sports watch. That sporty aspect is emphasised by its stepped lugs, ceramic tachymeter bezel, elongated pushers and 200m water resistance rating. Looking at the structure of the case in isolation it’s pure sports, but things change when you add in the dial for consideration.

There’s a wealth of quality finishing to be found all over the watch’s dial. Facetted indexes sit on a sandblasted base that’s available in either silvery white or dark blue and that’s not the least of it. The tricompax subdials – consisting of 30-minute timer at 12, 12-hour timer at 6 and subtle small seconds at 9 – feature sandblasted centres with snailed edges.

Plus, the central hour and minute hands are partially skeletonised with SuperLuminova highlights, there’s also small strips of lume between each of the hour markers and the peripheral minute track. On top of all that there’s also a day-date window at 3. Objectively it’s quite a busy dial with 8 indicators, but the careful distribution of colour and finishing makes it perfectly legible and easy to read.

Behind the sapphire exhibition caseback is the ML112 automatic movement, based on the ETA/Valjoux 7750. Specs-wise, it has a 48-hour power reserve, a high frequency of 28,800vph and Incabloc shock resistance. Under Maurice Lacroix’s attention it’s been finished to the same level as the PONTOS S Chronograph’s dial with perlage, Côtes de Genève and sunray brushing.

This may well be one of the best all-rounder watches that Maurice Lacroix have ever produced. It’s sporty enough for all activities and elegant enough for all occasions, whether on steel bracelet or tone-matched NATO strap. On the bracelet it’s CHF 3,100 and on a strap it’s CHF 2,990 (approx. £2,720/£2,620).
