Longines Present Spirit Zulu Time 39mm with New Smaller Case Size

Longines Spirit Zulu Time Gold L3.802.5.53.6

When I think back to 2022, one of the most exciting releases of the year was the Longines Spirit Zulu Time. And I’m not saying that to be hyperbolic, I’m being factually accurate based on the fact that you, the Oracle Time readers, voted it as the Best Pilots’ Watch 2022 in our Community Watch Awards. Now, Longines are expanding the collection with the new Spirit Zulu Time 39mm.

Considering the name of the watch, you can probably figure out what’s been updated. Yep, it has a new case size. 39mm is substantially smaller than the original 42mm models, enhancing the appeal of the watch among collectors without gigantic forearms. What’s particularly great is that while the model has been miniaturised slightly, the design of the piece is exactly the same. It has the same bidirectional rotating bezel with 24-hour scale and ceramic insert and the same retro slanted aesthetic.

There are four versions of the Spirit Zulu Time 39mm being introduced to the range. Three of them are standard steel editions while the fourth, known as the highlight, is bi-metallic with an 18k yellow gold bezel and crown as well as a gilt GMT track. Rounding out the highlight is a chocolate brown bezel insert, sandblasted anthracite dial and beige numerals for the date window at 6 o’clock. The three regular ones are matte black, sandblasted anthracite (with green bezel) and sunray brushed blue. They’re presented on steel bracelets or coloured NATOs with an interchangeable system.

Beneath the surface is the L844.4 automatic GMT movement, the same one as used in the larger 42mm counterpart. It’s a very solid calibre with a 72-hour power reserve and plenty of anti-magnetic resistance thanks to silicon components including the balance spring. The movement is protected by a solid steel caseback with a depiction of Longines’ hourglass with wings logo in front of the Earth, presented in a geometric, almost Art Deco style.

The three steel references are each priced at £2,800 on the leather strap or £2,900 on the bracelet. The steel and gold model is priced at £3,850 on the leather or brown NATO strap and £3,850 on the bracelet, pretty good value all things considered. Overall, this is a great release, making a popular watch even more so thanks to the fact that more people can wear it. Naturally, it’s not quite as ground-breaking as the original launch since we’ve had time to get to know the collection now, but still, plenty to get excited about.
