Longines Present the Record Heritage, a Chronograph with Bundles of Retro Vintage Style

Longines Record Heritage

Longines know how to make great watches with classic designs. Just look at the recent Master Collection Anniversary Trio, simple, sophisticated dress watches as elegant as they come. The new Longines Record Heritage chronograph, the first tachymeter chronograph in the Record collection, follows similar principles of simplicity and refinement.

The case is made from stainless steel with the very wearable size of 40mm and has a beautifully uncomplicated design featuring a polished bezel and square chronograph pushers. It really allows the matte black dial with gold coloured accents to take the central focus, which is as it should be.

The dial itself has a bicompax layout featuring a small seconds subdial at 3 o’clock and a 30-minute timer at 9. A nice element is the decision to omit any form of date window that could possibly interrupt the smooth design. The hour scale consists of Arabic numerals for the even numbers and simple wedge-shaped indexes for the odd numbers, giving the piece a strong retro feel.

Encircling the Longines Record Heritage’s entire display sits a tachymeter, a scale that allows the wearer to calculate the speed of an object as it travels over a known distance. It’s typically considered to be a motor racing complication because it allows you to calculate your speed across the various splits or laps of a race and determine your performance. Great for shaving off a few seconds in practice, you know, before we had computers to do all that.

Beneath the surface of the dial and visible through an exhibition caseback, is the automatic calibre L895. It’s based on the ETA A31.L01 and has a 59-hour power reserve with COSC chronometer certification. It’s a really solid movement with little, if anything, to complain about.

The Longines Record Heritage is priced at £2,730 and comes on either a leather strap or a five-link steel bracelet. Surprisingly the price is the same for both strap options, making the bracelet even more enticing than it already is. Between this, the Ultra-Chron and the Spirit Zulu 2022 it’s been a strong 190th anniversary for Longines.
