In the watch industry it always seems like trends flip on a dime, one minute you hear that big watches are in, the next you hear that vintage, smaller sizes are all the rage. Currently the latter is in ascendancy, which as a slender wristed individual, I’m all for. Last week Chopard launched the Alpine Eagle 33mm, in keeping with the downsizing trend, Laco have announced a new generation of their Scorpion adventure watches at a reduced 39mm diameter.
In many regards, the 39mm case size suits the watch far better than its original 42mm sizing. From a thematic perspective, scorpions are known for being small and tough and the new edition lives up to that concept far better. It has a double-domed sapphire crystal and a uni-directional rotating ceramic bezel, both of which provide plenty of scratch resistance.
Style-wise, it’s a miniaturised version of the existing Scorpion and comes in the four of its signature colourways. There’s the white Himalya 39, orange Mojave 39, blue Atlantik 39 and green Amazonas 39. Each features their primary colour on the minute hand, 12 o’clock marker, 6 o’clock marker and rubber strap, with the exception of the Himalaya that has white hour markers but an orange minute hand and black strap.
Hidden behind the solid caseback engraved with a scorpion is the Laco 200 automatic calibre, which is based on old faithful, the Sellita SW200. It’s an absolute work horse with plenty of proven reliability, even if it has a power reserve of just 38-hours.

The Laco Scorpion 39mm is available for €930 on rubber strap or €980 on metal bracelet (approx. £810/£855). Sometimes all you need is a small change to make a watch worth taking a closer look at and with its fresh, slim profile the Scorpion 39 is certainly deserves consideration as either an adventure watch, diver (it has 300m water resistance) or daily beater.
