The Laco Kiel feels like the type of watch that has been around forever, a vintage pilot’s chronograph inspired by the giants of the archetype like the IWC Mark Series. However, the Kiel hasn’t actually been around forever because was discontinued in 2018, leaving a chronograph shaped hole in Laco’s collections, save for the odd limited edition. Fortunately, it’s back in the form of the new Laco Chronograph Kiel.2, in both Schwarz and Weiss editions.

Laco’s aim with this revival watch was to capture the vintage essence of the original Kiel but to redesign it with modern sensibilities in mind. As such, the proportions of its steel case have been slightly altered. It’s still a large watch, as is traditional for a pilot’s watch, but it’s been reduced to a more wearable 43mm. Many collectors will still hesitate but eventually passion will win out.

In addition to the new size of the Laco Chronograph Kiel.2, the steel case now has contrasting polished and brushed surfaces, creating a stronger visual impact. Similarly, the sapphire crystal has an anti-reflective coating so that the dial remains totally visible at all times, something which is further enhanced by the use SuperLuminova on the hands and Arabic numerals.

For the Chronograph Kiel.2 Schwarz edition, the piece has a black dial with stark white accents while on the Weiss edition, the colours are reversed. Both offer interesting takes on vintage pilot’s watch design with the Schwarz the more traditional of the two.

Under the surface, and visible through a sapphire exhibition caseback, is the Laco 500 automatic chronograph calibre. It’s based on the Sellita SW500 Elaboré movement with 56-hour power reserve, although optionally you can have it upgraded to the Top Grade version instead.

On Leather strap it’s priced at €2,190 (approx. £1,900), which is great value for a well-executed vintage pilot’s watch with a good movement. I will never be disappointed by a retro watch with modern specs.
