Sending civilians into space with a fancy watch strapped to their wrists has become an unexpected trend in recent months, we all remember Bezos’ trip with a custom Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch. Now, though, it’s IWC’s turn to kit out some budding astronauts with a chronograph named after the Inspiration4 mission due to set off in September.
Fittingly, four of the watches will make the journey on the wrists of the four crew members, who represent Leadership, Hope, Generosity and Prosperity. Following the multi-day trip through low orbit, the watches will be auctioned for charity with funds going to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The watches themselves are actually very cool. At the core they’re fairly standard IWC Pilot’s Chronographs, however they’ve been reimagined in a sleek white ceramic case for superb durability and scratch resistance and that clinical space farer aesthetic. However, the dial is anything but clinical with a deep blue background covered with pad-printed stars, making it reminiscent of aventurine glass.
There is also plenty of Inspiration4 branding across the piece, on the engraved caseback, white rubber strap and small seconds subdial. That subdial, at 6 o’clock, is joined by a 12-hour timer at 9, a 30-minute timer at 12 and a day-date function at 3. All of which is operated by the manufacture 69380 calibre chronograph movement, an automatic piece with a 46-hour power reserve.
Inspiration4 is scheduled to take off in September from the historic Kennedy Space Centre and is being led by experienced pilot Jared Isaacman, who is also the brains behind the mission. Alongside the rest of his crew, who are currently training with Elon Musk’s SpaceX organisation, he hopes to raise money and awareness for St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The coolest thing about IWC’s Inspiration4 is that it is unapologetically space age with the clean white case and starry dial and whoever picks them up from the auction is going to get a prime collectible. And with only the four being made, exclusivity is well assured.
