IWC Add a Duo of Stealthy Black Ceratanium Watches to Top Gun Collection

IWC Top Gun Pilot’s Watches in Ceratanium

While we’re still waiting for Mr Cruise’s next high-flying film to drop, IWC have released their latest pair of watches inspired by Top Gun. Although let’s be clear, the IWCs are inspired by the real US Navy Pilot Training Program, not the films. While the two watches are totally distinct from each other, they work well as a double act, creating a mini subcollection of Top Gun Ceratanium watches consisting of a Pilot’s Watch Timezoner and a Big Pilot Perpetual Calendar.

IWC Pilot’s Watch Timezoner® Top Gun Ceratanium

Ceratanium, for anyone keeping track of the latest high-tech watchmaking materials,  is a material made from ceramic and titanium. It took five years to develop and captures the benefits of both materials, such as the scratch resistance of ceramic and the corrosion resistance of titanium. It has been used for the Timezoner’s rather large 46mm case.

However, what really stands out about the Pilot’s Watch Timezoner Top Gun Ceratanium is that it’s the first time a world timer function has been added to the Top Gun range. The previous absence is somewhat understandable considering that world timers are slightly more frequent flier than fighter ace. However, with a 24-hour function at 12 o’clock and a cities ring on a tactical black ceramic rotating bezel, it becomes a natural fit for the collection.

Beneath the surface, and visible through the tinted sapphire caseback, is the IWC 82760 Calibre. It’s an automatic movement with a Pellaton winding system and ceramic reinforcement that has a 60-hour power reserve. The watch has an annual production limit of 500 pieces and costs £15,200.

Unlike the Timezoner, we’ve already seen a handful of Top Gun Perpetual Calendars like the Mojave Desert edition. Arguably Perpetual Calendars are also on the more civilian end of pilot’s watch specs, but their prestigious nature makes them the perfect pairing with Top Gun’s elite. And now it’s been reimagined in matte black Ceratanium and presented on IWC’s first ever Ceratanium bracelet.

The bracelet is around 30% lighter than its steel equivalent making it much more wearable and not to mention comfortable on your wrist. Although, for people who prefer a bit of heft to their watches it might be off-putting to have a 46.2mm diameter watch that’s so light. Add to that the fact that it’s a perpetual calendar, one of horology’s most prestigious complications, and you’ll want it to feel secure, which is not necessarily something that comes from lightweight construction. However, it is an important innovation and this watch shows it off well.

Its display is unchanged from previous Top Gun Perpetual Calendars with hours, minutes, small seconds, moonphase, day, date, month, year, and power reserve indicator. All of which is powered by the IWC 52615 calibre with an immense 7-day power reserve, again fitted with IWC’s Pellaton winding system. And it really puts the perpetual in perpetual calendar as it won’ need adjusting until 2100 if kept wound, and it will take over 500 years for the moonphase to desynch by a full day.

As one of the top haute horology watches made almost entirely from IWC’s most advanced material, the price tag of the Perpetual Calendar Top Gun Ceratanium likely to be the biggest sticking point at CHF 48,000 (approx. £38,000). It also has a limited annual production of 150 pieces. Overall, I prefer the character of the Mojave edition but if your preference is for stealthy black, this is where it’s at.
