Traditionnelle Moonphase Diamonds - Harrods

As the Harrods vs Bucherer war of liveried exclusives rages on, London’s most famous department store has just brought a shiny new weapon to bear on the competition – and it’s double-barrelled. That’s because the latest entry into their green-tinted canon is none other than Vacheron Constantin with not one but two new 20-piece Harrods Limited Editions.

Both pieces fall in Vacheron’s Traditionnelle collection which, as the name suggests, is home to their more long-standing traditions of haute horology. Vacheron has been going for 260 years and Traditionnelle is the clearest link to that heritage.

The first of the two pieces is the exquisite Traditionnelle Moon Phase. With its 36mm rose gold case it’s a delicate little piece, leaning into the historical inclinations of the collection. That delicacy is helped along with diamond-set bezel, lugs and crown totalling 1.15 carats in 82 round-cut stones.

Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Moonphase - Harrods Edition

The indicators are pretty self-explanatory: central minutes and hours with a small seconds at 6 o’clock; a power reserve indicator at 11 o’clock and the titular moon phase just below 9 o’clock. That however is no ordinary moon phase. While most outside of a perpetual calendar are accurate to 3 years, Vacheron’s won’t need adjustment for 112 years.

Somehow though those indicators play second fiddle to the dial itself, which has been finished to perfection with the repeated motif of Vacheron’s Maltese cross, albeit with a bit of an aesthetic flourish. It lends a depth far beyond sunray or other, lighter guilloche and all but makes the watch. That dial is also the clearest link between the two Harrods timepieces.

Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Self-Winding Harrods Edition

The second of the pair is the Traditionnelle Self-Winding, a far simpler piece that also has that fantastic dial. At 38mm it’s rose gold case is a little larger, though still in vintage proportions. The rest of the watch however is far more pared-back.

There are no complications here, just a minimal, flawlessly finished watch with a date window at 3 o’clock, small seconds at 9. It’s even rid itself of all those diamonds making it, if we were to label these things, the men’s watch of the pair. His and hers limited editions from Harrods seems about right.

Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Harrods Edition - Caseback

Unlike many other Harrods editions which put that famous green wherever they can, Vacheron has kept it at arm’s length. In fact, other than a little ‘Limited Edition’ engraving around the exhibition casebacks, the only real tells are the Harrods green alligator straps. But then, you can’t find these particular watches anywhere else; if that isn’t a trump card for the British luxury institution, nothing is. The ball’s in your court, Bucherer.
