Despite sounding a little grim, Mexican Day of the Dead is one of the most vibrant, life-affirming celebrations of the passed in the world. It’s also one that custom watchmaker Undone have tapped into with their equally grim and vibrant tribute to Día De Los Muertos, the Calavera Neón.
Bringing together the influences of Latin American artist and political cartoonist José Guadalupe Posada and deep historical Mexican celebration, the dial of the watch is dominated by an incredibly bright neon skull, replete with the kind of designs you’d see on sugar skulls on Ofrendas.
It’s rendered in fluorescent paint against a stark black background and it eye-catching to say the least. Under UV light it glows in pink, yellow, blue and green, enough that you might want to turn it face down on your bedside table.
Flip the watch over and things get a little darker – or as dark as an electric guitar playing skeleton can get – with the phrase ‘Todos Somos Calaveras’, translating to ‘we are all skulls.’ Think of it like a Mexican momento mori with a far more playful outlook.
The whole thing is wrapped up in a svelte 40mm stainless steel case in black DLC and powered by a Seiko MI VK61 Mechanical-Quartz Hybrid Flyback Chronograph, your usual Undone fare, and comes with a UV light to really show off the namesake skull.
For £310 it doesn’t even matter if you don’t have an ofrenda in your house; it’s bright, it’s cool and it’s one hell of a way to commemorate the unique aesthetics of Día De Los Muertos come 2nd November.
