TAG Heuer’s signature sea-farer has taken the plunge for 2020 and joined the veritable fleet of traveller’s complications released in the past 6 months with their very own take on the famous Batman colourway in the new Aquaracer GMT.
First off, this is no Rolex rip-off. Sure, theirs is the most famous use of the black / blue 24-hour bezel, but it’s also a two-tone that just makes sense: blue for day, black for night, just like in real life. Well, a couple miles outside of London’s orange glow at least. And other than that cursory similarity, the Aquaracer is a very different marine animal.
More water sports than Riviera, the Aquaracer’s angular, multi-faceted case leaves little doubt that this is a watch meant to be splashed about in. It helps that the 43mm case is water resistant to 300m of course, but it’s more the look and feel of the piece that screams high-octane.
That design has been paired with a ridged, brushed dial in an immaculate ocean blue, perfectly matched with the same colour in the GMT bezel. It’s chunky, robust and reliable.
It’s also more useful than a fair few GMT timepieces out there. In a similar vein to the GMT-Master II, the second time zone hand can be set independently of the local time; you can then set the rotating 24-hour bezel to keep track of a third time zone… in theory. The only downside is that you have to somehow remember where the GMT hand should be pointing if you want to track all three.
Still, the movement itself won’t the thing letting you down. TAG Heuer’s ever-reliable Calibre 7 Automatic movement has a 46-hour power reserve, all protected by that rugged stainless steel case.
The Aquaracer continues to be a jack of all seafaring trades, TAG Heuer’s racing inspirations taken to the high seas, and the GMT is an obvious yet appreciated addition. Here’s hoping they bring in a few other funky bezels in the future; we could use a bit more horological colour right now.
