Hiroshi Fujiwara – and by extension his multidisciplinary studio Fragment – is one of the most influential names in streetwear design. Yet it’s not just the occasional collab with Nike; Fujiwara himself is an avid watch collector, so it’s no surprise to see that Fragment has turned their considerable creative talent towards horological design, too. Case in point, the TAG Heuer x Fragment Design Heuer 02 Chronograph.
This is the second time Fragment has worked with TAG Heuer, the first being the Carrera Heuer from the tail end of 2018, with its grounded, throwback take on the original racing watch. Now the collaborative effort has moved forward a few years with the latest 500-piece limited edition firmly rooted in the early 70s.
That of course means the incredibly cool ovoid C-case that has become an aesthetic staple of 70s watchmaking – and TAG Heuer’s Formula 1 collection – given a distinctly modern overhaul by Fujiwara. The black ceramic tachymeter bezel has been emblazoned with hints of bright red, matched by the small hour markers and running hands.
Despite being a sports chronograph, the overall look is incredibly clean, with just black, white and red across dial and bezel, helped along by the bi-compax layout and lack of a running seconds hand. It’s unfussed, minimal and incredibly cool.
Flip the watch over and you’re greeted by a view of the Heuer 02 column-wheel chronograph, somewhat obstructed by a red-tinted crystal and Fragment’s logo. It’s a nice touch, and one that’s a little more playful than the rest of the rightfully-restrained limited edition.
It’s taken two years for Fujiwara to return his attention to TAG Heuer. Given the success of the first piece and now this sleek new take on a 70s racing chrono, here’s hoping there’s less of a gap next time.
