Introducing: Star Wars x Kross Studio Death Star Tourbillon

Star Wars x Kross Studio Death Star TourbillonIt’s incredibly tempting to make a joke about how this timepiece is ‘no moon’ or for extra horological flavour ‘no moonphase’, but I shall try to resist being overcome by too many Star Wars puns. In case you haven’t guessed by my strange preamble, the latest watch from Kross Studio is a Star Wars-inspired limited edition collectors set made in partnership with Lucasfilm.

The 10 sets that are being sold consist of a Death Star styled tourbillon watch, an authentic movie prop kyber crystal, some extra straps and a collectors case mimicking the storage system used to contain kyber crystals in the Rogue One movie.

While the Death Star tourbillon is not as easy to mistake for a moon as it’s gigantic movie counterpart, it’s still very large by watch standards with a 45mm diameter case made from grade 5 titanium. It has a funky sci-fi domed design with the crystal blending smoothly into the case, echoing the Death Star’s iconic shape.

A stylised Death Star cage covers the central tourbillon, a deviation from the usual placement of a tourbillon at 6 o’clock that is harder to manufacture, showing that care has gone into the technical side of this watch as well as its aesthetics. And talking of technical ability, the mechanical, manual calibre that powers this planet destroy has an astonishing 120-hour power reserve, lasting five days between winds.

There are also plenty of other nods to Star Wars references such as the Imperial Fleet shaped hands and Imperial logo on the caseback. In order to let the design dominate, many of the elements that make the watch function have been hidden in innovative ways, the crown has been replaced by a pusher and the D-ring winding mechanism is integrated into the caseback.

This limited edition collection also marks the first time that the authentic kyber crystal props will be made available to the public alongside the movie Rogue One-inspired case. The 10 sets are priced at $150,000 so the chances of picking one up are probably slimmer than your chances of survival on Alderaan with the Death Star looming in the sky. But if you use the power of The Force, maybe you’ll be lucky enough.
