If you have some cash earmarked for one of the 992 run of the 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition, you’re probably already pretty excited. The 1950s and 1960s-inspired cherry red speedster is full of throwback design touches and seriously cool vintage hints. But if that weren’t enough, it also allows you to get a hold of this: the Porsche Design Chrono 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition.
Based on the 1919 Chronotimer Flyback, this new tie-in timepiece has plenty of the same historic 911 touches as the car. On the dial, that means chronograph subdials taken directly from the car’s green-tinted racing dashboard, while the outer track is red between 11 and 12 o’clock, imitating a rev counter.
By now it should go without saying that the rotor, too hints at the watch’s inspirations. Shaped like the rims of the 992 Targa Heritage itself, it gives a nice flourish to the Calibre WERK 01.100 movement the flyback-equipped flagship of Porsche Design’s collection.
Otherwise, the watch is the same mix of technical styling and cool minimalism that defined the 1919 collection. That means a 42mm titanium case with alternating polished and bead-blasted finishes. The main difference though is that the watch’s signature hollowed lugs have been given a bronze PVD finish (coated rather than solid to keep the lightweight, racing feel) for a lovely two-tone finish.
At EUR 10,950, it’s a pricey but well-built Porsche Design tribute and, like the previous owner’s watches they’ve done, is one of the best-looking. Limited to 992 pieces to match the car, you’ll need to order it alongside. It’s almost worth ordering the new Targa just for that.
