Introducing: Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Triple Rétrograde

Maurice Lacriox Triple Rétrograde Masterpiece Collection

If you’re desperate for a more accessible take on haute horology, look no further than Maurice Lacroix’s Masterpiece Collection. Skeleton watches, unique dials, even mystery pieces, it’s an impressive range – one which now, welcomes a handsome Triple Rétrograde to its ranks.

True to its name, the new watch features retrograde counters at the 12, 3 and 6 o’clock positions. While Maurice Lacroix isn’t a novice when it comes to showing days, dates and second time zones, this piece brings a cleaner, more intriguing look to your classic calendar piece. In fact, ‘classic’ is a bit of a misnomer, despite the traditional finishing across the board.

Looks-wise the Triple Rétrograde comes in two distinct designs. The first offers a classic silvered design with a Clous de Paris guilloche dial, black transfers and blued hands. The second option is the bolder of the two, an anthracite dial with Côte de Genève guilloché finishes, silver transfers and 4N gold hands.

Regardless of the finish, the movement inside is the same. The ML291 Calibre, visible through the exhibition caseback, is based on the ever-reliable Sellita SW200 automatic for smooth, comfortable accuracy. It’s a nice bit of work which is unsurprising given some of the great calibres and movements Maurice Lacroix has used over the years – especially in this collection.

The two watches have a generously proportioned 43mm case in stainless steel. It feels a tad large for so classically-finished a watch but it means the retrograde indicators have enough space to show off. The case is finished with an alligator-style leather in either a black or midnight blue flavour depending on the variant you choose.

The pair sit nicely alongside the rest of the Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Collection. Personally, I’ve always preferred their sportier pieces like the Pontos, but if you’re after accessible high watchmaking, there’s no denying that the Triple Rétrograde deserves its position in the Masterpiece Collection – especially with its £4,900 price tag.
