After the Longines Spirit earlier in the year, the Swiss watchmaker is now highlighting their aviation links again. Rather than a modern interpretation though, the Avigation Type A-7 1935 is pulled wholesale from the Longines archives.
Taken by itself, the design of the Type A-7 is classic aviation, with the same kind of design flourishes you’d expect on a military Breguet. The original model in fact was ordered by the U.S. Air Force back in, you guessed it, 1935. Where this differs from other pilots’ pieces however is that it’s tilted 40 degrees to the right.
The reason is simple: it’s easier to read on the wrist in the claustrophobic confines of a vintage cockpit. You’ll have probably seen driving watches with the same kind of angle – both figuratively and literally – and it’s even more vital not to let go of the controls in 30,000 feet in the air.
Otherwise it has the same aviation necessities of most 30s-40s pilots watches. That means an oversized, fluted crown and a high contrast dial with large, Arabic numerals. More interestingly it also includes a monopusher chronograph, something we’ve been seeing plenty more of recently. It’s certifiably less useful than a standard chronograph (you can’t stop and start without resetting) but is far easier to operate.
Said chronograph is powered by the L788.2 calibre automatic movement, an ETA riff developed for Longines for the previous, white-dialled version of this watch back in 2016. It’s about time they used it again and personally, I find the more military-slanted black here far, far more handsome.
