The watch world may be hung up on returning to the 60s and 70s right now, but IWC were well ahead of the curve when they revamped their Ingenieur collection three years back. They went right back to the original 1960s design and it stuck. Now IWC are giving the top end model of that collection a revamp with the Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month Titanium.
Previously this particular model has only been available in precious metals which, as far as I’m concerned, kind of defeated the point. Sure it’s a nice piece of haute horology that deserves dressing up, but this is still a sports watch. The 45mm Titanium case is a far better option.
It’s not just the case that’s changed though. The previous version’s white dial, the only option available, has been swapped with a cool slate grey version. It’s a small change but it transforms the watch from an off-kilter chronograph into a serious-looking racing timepiece.
The mechanics however are exactly the same as before. The digital date and month are ascool as ever, a nice, modern alternative to the indicators on more classical watches, especially with the open-hearted subdials. As a perpetual calendar it can also take into account a leap year, which is indicated at 6 o’clock.
All of that is powered by IWC’s IW381802 calibre with a solid 65 hours of power reserve. You’ll want to keep it wound so you don’t need to faff with the calendar, but nearly 3 days should make it pretty simple. The movement’s finished with a rose gold rotor; well you can’t have a perpetual calendar without a little gold, can you?
All of this substantial piece of watchmaking comes in at 41,500 Euros – just over £36,000 – which isn’t bad at all for a perpetual calendar. It is however limited to 100 pieces globally so if you like it, get in quick.
