At the beginning of the year HYT revealed their new H1.0 model, a watch that even by their lofty standards was pretty bold. A huge dome of sapphire crystal, bellows pumping away at the centre and that iconic tract of timekeeping tubing, it was a hell of a watch. Now, after previously showing off that liquid in red, blue and green HYT is taking a darker turn – because everything looks good in black.
The new H1.0 is pretty much identical to its more colourful siblings. It has the same massive 48.8mm case, rising a monumental 20.8mm off the wrist. Ultra-thin this is not. It has the same signature HYT hydro-mechanical movement and, despite its bulk, is the most comfortable of their watches to date. But what a difference a colour can make.

The time-indicating liquid being pumped around the periphery is a sinister black which, against the anthracite grey backdrop should make it harder to read. Crucially though, there is some colour. Below the liquid is a layer of bright green superluminova, complemented by numerals around the edge of the watch in the same minty hue. There’s also a splash of red for the power reserve indicator.

The result is a more nuanced design than the other watches in the collection with a touch more contrast throughout. The black liquid is a nice touch, making an already strange method of timekeeping almost otherworldly. It doesn’t make the watch any easier to fit under a shirtsleeve – in fact it doesn’t upset the HYT formula at all – but it’s definitely the coolest HYT to date.
