HYT H0 SOONNOW Skull Watch

We’ve been waiting for something dramatically new from HYT for a while now. Sure their current range is inventive as ever, but other than some bold stylistic embellishments their ring of coloured liquid hasn’t really changed over the years. Now, that’s about to change. Well, SOONOW, anyway.

Don’t get me wrong, the overarching concept is the same, their unique hydromechanical timekeeping using liquid and bellows, but the presentation of their brand new SOONOW timepiece is cooler than ever.

For one, rather than a ring around the edge, the liquid outlines a skull. The skull makes regular appearances across HYT’s collection pieces, yet not normally quite this punchily, outlined with bright green, including the around the eye sockets and mouth.

The main bone structure of the skull is made up of white gold pins, taking inspiration from Aztec motifs to give the entire thing a big, bold, three-dimensional look. The eyes are there for more than keeping things a bit tongue in cheekbone too; the open eye double as a power reserve indicator, while the name-printed left eye does a rotating every 60 seconds, doubling as the second counter.

The final dial touch – other than the perforated metal dial around the skull itself with its industrial look – is the inclusion of hour markers written longform and hovering above the green liquid.

This is no shy and retiring timepiece and it wouldn’t be even without the skull. On the wrist it’s 48.8mm in diameter and another 20.08 high which, in case you’re having trouble picturing those dimensions, is absolutely gargantuan. Still, that’s par for the course with HYT and the SOONOW is bigger and better than ever.

It’s just a shame about the name really.
