Carl F. Bucherer’s stunning Heritage Bi-Compax was one of our favourite watches of the past 12 months, easily one of the finest retro racing chronographs out there. But that doesn’t mean their more rugged offerings should be cast into shadow, particularly when they’re already as stealthy as the new Patravi ScubaTec Black.
Based on the previous Black Manta Limited Edition released back in the summer (and covered here), this new, non-limited version is pretty similar, if a little less fishy. The main difference is the dial, which no longer showcases the ghostly sea-creature of the Manta but opts instead for a scaled effect with fine black detailing.
The gold colouring has gone from both dial and diving bezel in favour of the all-black look. The only interruption to the monochromatic dark is the indexes which are both finely structured and covered in lume, a necessity for the depths. Though in this case, they give off a ghostly blue rather than the usual green.
Otherwise, it’s the same 44.6mm titanium case, light despite its size, complete with a ceramic bezel. The whole thing is water-resistant to a solid 500m and powered by the just as solid CFB 1950.1 calibre automatic movement. The 38-hour power reserve isn’t the best out there, but it’s still COSC certified so accuracy won’t be a problem.
Still, it’s not only the look and movement that follows on from the Manta; it shares a touch of sustainability through the recycled black rubber strap. It’s a small touch but every little helps, even if it is just a drop in the ocean.
