Introducing: Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver 2021 Collection

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver 2021

The Royal Oak with its untouchable octagonal bezel and screw design is a titan of haute horlogerie and its sport-luxe cousin, the Royal Oak Offshore Diver, has been as equally iconic since its debut in 2005, although it was known as the Scuba at the time. A new collection of three Offshore Divers has been announced by Audemars Piguet featuring three different colours, an exciting new calibre and a few extra treats as well – let’s jump into them.

From a style point of view, the new pieces hit all the notes we could want from a Royal Oak. It has the classic octagonal bezel with screws design, presented here in satin-brushed and polished stainless steel, with matching 42mm case, as well as the “Méga-Tapisserie” dial that’s the sporty variation of the regular Royal Oak’s dial. It also keeps up with its diver buddies with 30 bar (300m) water resistance.

Each of the three timepieces is themed around a specific colour, displayed prominently on their dials: khaki, blue and grey. The rest of the watches’ styling has been adjusted to compliment the dominant colour accordingly. For example, the square, facetted hour markers are made of white gold on the blue and grey options but rose gold on the khaki. Similarly the inner-ring dive timer, which is adjusted via the crown at 10 o’clock, is available in black and blue on the blue watch, black and beige on the khaki and blue and white on the grey watch, all of which are great combinations.

The designs are really robust, able to withstand anything an athlete could throw at it thanks to its durable case material and ceramic crowns with screw down guards. But they’re versatile too, the blue version is ideal for use in and around water while the khaki feels more like a jungle or savannah explorer with flavours of the military, whereas the grey is the clear option for collectors who want the prestige of the watch but find themselves trapped in the boardroom all too often.

While the colours are no doubt nice, we’ve seen the Offshore Diver in some crazy colours before, just look back to 2016’s bright yellow offerings. So, what’s particularly interesting about the new collection is the innovations it brings. The Calibre 4308 is brand new and this is the first time AP has given the Royal Oak Offshore Diver an easy-change strap system.

Let’s look at the movement first. The 4308 is an automatic movement with second and instant-jump date indication, equipped with a patented setting mechanism that adds stability and precision when adjusting the watch’s functions. It runs at 28,800 vph and has a new blackened 22 carat pink gold oscillating weight visible through the sapphire crystal caseback. The power-reserve is 60-hours so you can afford to have a few days off between expeditions, which is nice. As you’d expect from AP the finishing is exquisite as always with a classic mix of Côtes de Genève, traits tirés and circular graining.

Strap-wise, each of the watches in the collection comes with two, a colour-matched rubber strap and an alternative rubber strap in black or blue depending on the piece. However, there are other options you could invest in such as one of the three calfskin leather options in black, brown and beige if you expect to keep your diver firmly on land. The interesting thing here is the new quick-change system, a click and release mechanism that has been integrated into the case’s studs and buckles, meaning the overall profile of the watch remains the same. It’s a small change but a big quality of life improvement.

Individually, the new colours, the new calibre and the new strap system wouldn’t make for terribly compelling releases but combined as they are, it’s a nice collection that’s sure to get Audemars Piguet fans chomping at the bit to get hold of one.
