Introducing: Audemars Piguet Royal Oak “Jumbo” Extra-Thin Diamond Indexes

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin Rose Gold with Diamond Indexes

You’d never exactly say the Royal Oak is particularly stealthy, but that hasn’t stopped Audemars Piguet releasing them under-the-radar without a toot of a fanfare to be heard. Their latest take on the Royal Oak Jumbo for example merely coalesced onto their website, which is an impressive feat of restraint given that it’s a cool new version of a cult classic.

These are not your standard Royal Oaks. For one, the ultra-thin pieces are draped in either platinum or rose gold rather than the classic steel. Well, I suppose that’s not exactly ground-breaking nowadays, there are plenty of precious metal sports watches even amongst the Royal Oaks. More intriguing though are the diamond indexes.

With all the blinged-out APs on rappers wrists, it’s easy to forget that very few of the watches actually have diamond indexes. Even rarer are those that don’t have gems anywhere BUT the indexes. Here we have it though, in  colour contrast with the black onyx dial and geometric contrast with the signature octagonal bezel and hexagonal screws.

The result is a nice new – and understated as these things go – take on the Jumbo, playing with the dress watch sensibilities of an ultra-thin timepiece and the sporty vibe of the Royal Oak. It flashes a little ice without shoving it in your face and the platinum version at least requires a closer look to see notice the wealth on show.

Not that you’re all that likely to see it unfortunately. One of the reasons for the lack of fanfare may well be that these watches will be damn hard to come by; not only are there just 70 examples, but those pieces will be sold exclusively by Tokyo-based retailer Yoshida.

Is it worth a trip to Japan? Probably. But don’t expect any to be left by the time you can actually get down there.
