Military watches are big at the moment. Whether it’s one of the original Dirty Dozen pieces, an old A-11 or some rugged, modern piece designed for spec ops, they’re absolutely everywhere. Some are affordable, some are practical and some just look cool. The Holton Professional from Elliot Brown just happens to be all three.
Like most military timepieces it was commissioned by the armed forces for one sole purpose: to be able to tell the time through all of the rigours of the harshest environments on Earth. Not too much of an ask then. Still, Elliot Brown rose to the occasion. The Holton’s 43mm stainless steel case can survive water, dust, sand, shocks and probably a fair few explosions to boot.
The level of detail is surprisingly good too; just look at the bezel. The 120-click unidirectional rotating bezel is operable with gloves on, and the indentations around it are filled with superluminova for excessively good low-light visibility. The hobnailing helps with grip, the metal’s been hardened and a PVD coating adds the finishing touch of rock-hard strength. That level of detail goes for the rest of the watch, too.
Of the two colours available we’d say opt for the khaki. The black PVD is cool, but for pure militaristic style that particular shade of green is very hard to beat, especially on the matching woven textile strap.
The quartz movement is just there to get the job done. There’s not a military unit on earth that would sacrifice practicality for airs and graces about craftsmanship. Still, the low battery indicator is pretty useful and it’ll last you three years.
This is not a piece of haute horology, that’s for sure. But as a watch it does its job – and does it well. After all, if you’re going for a trek through the desert followed by a bit of vertical climbing, you don’t want to wear a Breguet. Elliot Brown’s Holton Professional is a far, far better choice.
