Hublot Classic Fusion Chronograph Orlinski Ceramic Watch

Ceramic as a material is great; it’s hard, scratch resistance, everything you want. But it does tend to be… well, a little dull. Unless, that is, you’re Hublot. In their new Classic Fusion Chronograph collaboration with artist Richard Orlinski, they are showing the brighter side of ceramic.

Even if you somehow don’t know the name, you’ve probably seen Richard Orlinski’s work. The contemporary, faceted sculptures of his Born Wild series are instantly-recognisable, violent beasts transformed into works of art. They are also the inspiration behind the new Classic Fusion Chronograph Orlinski Ceramic.

The specific piece in question is Orlinski’s 2004 piece, the Born Wild Crocodile, a huge reptilian of striking red vectors. Hublot has de-fanged the work and reinterpreted it as a faceted, bright red version of the Classic Fusion’s impressive 45mm case – the first case to be built from such a vibrant ceramic.

This isn’t Hublot’s first collaboration with Orlinski; the partnership started last year with the same kind of faceted bezel connecting to his best-selling works. Until now however, Hublot simply didn’t have the materialistic technology to create this particular breed of ceramic. You can be sure this won’t be the last time they use it.

This being Hublot, there is of course as much to look at in the movement as the case. The openworked dial lets you see the monochromatic contrast of the HUB1155 automatic chronograph movement – and it’s an impressive sight.

The signature bezel screws and chronograph pushers, some of the most satisfying to use in the industry, contrast with Orlinski’s signature red both on the case and the rubber strap. A Hublot is a statement at the best of times but this? This is something more.

Hublot Classic Fusion Chronograph Orlinski Ceramic Watch

The Classic Fusion is all about just that: fusion. The Chronograph Orlinski Ceramic however is the single most obvious demonstration of that theme, combining advanced materials, haute horology and a modern, artistic sensibility into what can only be described as one hell of a watch.
