There are many things you might associate with Hublot: football, big, bold designs and wonderfully absurd designs to name just a few. Conservation however is not on that list. But as the environment becomes one of the most important issues of our time, the oversized Swiss watchmaker is ready to do their part with the Big Bang Unico SORAI.
SORAI stands for Save Our Rhino Africa India which, aside from sounding like a mistranslation is one of the most important rhino conservation initiatives in the world. Given that two thirds of all rhino species are threatened by extinction in the all-too-near future, it’s an initiative that could do with a little extra funding.
Now a good portion of that funding will come from Hublot’s latest limited edition, from which a large (yet undisclosed) proportion of the proceeds will go towards rhino conservation at Care for Wild, the largest rhino orphanage and sanctuary in the world.
The watch itself lives up nicely to its inspirations, and I don’t just mean that it’s as chunkily proportioned as its horned inspirations. For one, its 45mm is made from sandblasted ceramic in a sandy colour just a couple shades lighter than what IWC previously did with their Mojave Spitfire.
The same goes for the dial which is colour matched and skeletonised to show off the Unico movement inside, with a rhino at the centre of the 9 o’clock chronograph subdial. Other than that – and the SORAI logo on the exhibition caseback – the watch is the same as the standard Big Bang UNICO. That means 100m water resistance and a 72-hour power reserve.
The limited edition comes with two different straps. The first is a nice, beige NATO to match the case, the other a cool camouflage rubber number. Both echo the home terrain of the rhinos, not to mention the militaristic way SORAI is combatting illegal poaching and smuggling.
Limited to 100 pieces, the Big Bang Unico SORAI is one of many when it comes to watches for the environment, but that doesn’t stop it being for a fantastic cause. With its striking ceramic case, skeleton dial and sheer size, it’s one hell of an advocate for saving the rhinos.
