Glashütte Original PanoMaticLunar Forest Green Watch Review

Glashütte Original PanoMaticlunar Forest Green

The German watch manufacturer Glashütte Original has been producing watches for over 175 years from the small town of Glashütte in Saxony. In that time they have established a reputation for high-quality German watchmaking, design and quality. Some of my favourite pieces from their current line up are the Sixties and Seventies lines and having always been fascinated with moon phase pieces, their PanoMaticLunar. Both the Sixties and seventies line over the past year or two have had dial variations released in more vibrant colours that really adds to the playfulness of these watches. And with the PanoMaticLunar this latest version released adds a vibrant forest green as a colour option as a limited edition.

The PanoMaticLunar has featured in Glashütte Original’s line up in various materials for some time now. Still, this steel and forest green dialled version is quite a different look from the more reserved colours of grey, black and blue they usually use. Green can be a challenging colour to use with some people loving it and others not so appreciative. But there is no doubt it’s certainly an eye-catching colour especially used on this dial layout.

The dial layout on the PanoMaticLunar is based on an asymmetrical configuration with the hands set to the left-hand side of the dial arranged vertically. The date and moon phase complications to the left-hand side again in a vertical layout. This makes the dial superbly legible and allows for the characteristic big date, the Panorama Date of Glashütte Original. This date wheel is actually composed of two concentrically arranged date discs and offers superb legibility in this layout. Above the date is the moon phase which shows the moon as it transitions through its waxing and waning cycle. The details and finishing are exceptional indeed, with the moon in a high polish finish set against a silver star sky background. It really is very well executed and eye-catching.

To the left side of the dial are the minute and seconds. Minutes are arranged to the top left with the seconds bisecting this just below. The minute section of the dial uses simple baton markers for hours with a double baton for the 12 o’clock position. The second’s portion of the dial directly below the hours is printed crisply against the green dial with the seconds marked in 10-second intervals. The hands for the hours dial and seconds dial are finished in white gold and filled with Super-LumNova meaning legibility at night still presents no issues.

The case for the PanoMaticLunar Forest green edition is stainless steel. It comes in at a very wearable 40mm in diameter and 12.7mm thick with a mixture of very fine brushing to the sides and a high polish to the top side of the lugs and bezel. It also features a signed crown with the double-g logo. Sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating is used for the watch face. Sapphire crystal is also used on the back of the watch to display the highly decorated, automatic in-house produced calibre 90-02.

This movement provides 42 hours of power reserve and is a real feast for the eyes! Glashütte Original really have done a superb job of finishing this movement with a mixture of fine polishing, skeletonisation, bevelling, hand engraving and Glashütte Stripe finishing. The blued screws are all finely polished and viewing this through the display case back really is something special indeed. It’s no stretch to say watching this movement at work is truly mesmerising. The attention to detail and hand finishing that goes into each one of these pieces is second to none. I doubt anyone taking delivery of one of these would be disappointed!

The PanoMaticLunar I reviewed here was provided on a bracelet. Just like the rest of the watch is incredibly well finished featuring a nicely milled clasp with double button security release and plenty of micro-adjustments on a small ratchet system to make sure the fit is perfect. The bracelet finish is a polished centre link with brushed outer links, which suits the overall dress watch look. Still, the PanoMaticLunar is also available on a brown alligator nubuck leather strap with a deployment buckle if you prefer that to the bracelet. The contrasting look of the brown and green plays well to the forest colour scheme of this watch.

So final thoughts on the PanoMaticLunar from Glashütte Original. Well, firstly the colour. If you’re a fan of green dials, this one truly is beautiful. The black and green lacquered dial with that dégradé effect plays with the light in ways that make the dial come alive. It can go from a very dark almost black on the outer edges to a vibrant shimmer across the hours and seconds portion of the dial. I personally am very fond of the dial layout.

It’s incredibly functional and easy to read at a glance and all in a sensibly sized case. I thought the case might wear a little high, but on my wrist, it felt very comfortable without being top-heavy. The case finish is very simple but fantastic as you would expect from a watch at this price point. The movement finishing is nothing short of stunning. The attention to detail that Glashütte Original put into their production shines through when you take a moment to watch it in action.

Glashütte Original PanoMaticlunar Forest Green

It’s hard to fault the PanoMaticLunar, and it delivers so much in terms of fit and finishes and at a price that is hard to beat when compared to similarly complicated pieces with this level of movement and dial finishing. This forest green special edition is just that. Special. If you’re looking for a dress watch with incredible character and you like the green colour scheme, this should definitely be a watch you consider carefully. I doubt you will be disappointed.
