There are lots of ways to make buying a watch feel special to collectors. You can produce it as a limited edition, you can make it a region exclusive or you can make it a boutique exclusive – all of which make the act of successfully buying the watch feel like a quest completed and build an emotional attachment between the collector and the watch. Or as in the case of Grand Seiko’s latest launch, you can do all three. The new Spring Drive Peach Blossom 62GS SBGA529 is a 30 piece limited edition that is not only a US-exclusive, but also exclusive to a single boutique within the US – the Grand Seiko Boutique Lenox Square in Atlanta operated by Reeds Jewelers.
If you do make your way to Atlanta to buy one, you’ll find a lovely 40mm diameter x 12.8mm thickness titanium dress watch. The case is based on the 62GS series, which is Grand Seiko’s heritage inspired design based on their first automatic wristwatch from 1967. Its defining feature is the bezel-less design where the sapphire crystal rises directly from the case, creating a distinctive appearance where you can see the full arc of the case from lug-to-lug on either side of the crystal.
For the Spring Drive Peach Blossom 62GS SBGA529’s dial, they’ve opted for a pale pink blush that reflects the peach blossoms of Nagano prefecture. Specifically, a village in Nagano called Hanamomo no Sato which has earned a tourist reputation as the Valley of Peach Blossoms because of the carefully cultivated trees that line the street, creating a beautiful flower viewing festival each year. The dial has a gentle, frosted texture that’s designed to evoke images of petals. For timekeeping practicality, it also features central dauphine hands, a date window at 3 o’clock and a power reserve indicator at 8.

Powering the watch is the Spring Drive calibre 9R65 with 72-hour power reserve and an accuracy rating of +/-15 seconds per month. Spring Drive movements are a hybrid form of calibre that use a traditional mainspring to power a quartz regulator, giving you the convenience of never needing to replace the battery while having the improved accuracy and precision of quartz.
The Spring Drive Peach Blossom 62GS SBGA529 is priced at $7,600 (approx. £5,700) in a 30-piece limited edition. It’s also a boutique exclusive that’s only available from the Grand Seiko Boutique Lenox Square in Atlanta. Now that I think about it, that exclusivity is a cool mirror of the peach blossom festival itself: you have to make a pilgrimage to Hanamomo no Sato to view the peach blossom much in the same way you have to make a pilgrimage to Atlanta to buy the Peach Blossom.
